Pokémon GO Unveils Significant Overhaul to Trainer Leveling System

Pokémon GO players have become accustomed to regular updates, with numerous changes implemented since the game’s debut in 2016. Many of these modifications have contributed positively to the user experience, though not all have been universally embraced. Niantic, the game’s developer, continues to explore innovative enhancements to keep the gameplay fresh. A substantial overhaul of the Trainer levels in Pokémon GO is on the horizon, with players expecting these updates to roll out later this year.

Beginning Wednesday, October 15th, the maximum Trainer level in Pokémon GO will be elevated from 50 to 80. Players are familiar with the tasks required to advance from levels 41 to 50; however, these tasks will be eliminated, with new Level-Up tasks introduced for levels 71 through 80. Niantic indicates that many players may experience an automatic level increase with the change, as the overall leveling curve is being recalibrated. Importantly, players should not anticipate a decrease in their current levels as a result of this update.

The changes to the leveling system will introduce a variety of rewards tailored to the new level structure. Upon reaching level 25, players will gain access to new avatar items, alongside increases in storage capacity for Pokémon, items, and gifts at subsequent levels. During a recent media briefing, Niantic emphasized that players will unlock these storage expansions automatically as they reach the corresponding level—players will no longer need to purchase additional space through the in-game Shop.

For players who advance levels on October 15th, any new rewards that were missed will be awarded retroactively. For instance, if a player is at level 40 and new avatar items are introduced at level 25, those items will still be granted. However, it is noteworthy that rewards offered between levels 41 and 50 will be retired, although players who have already obtained these rewards will retain them. For example, if a player received the Level 50 Jacket prior to the change, they will keep it. Additionally, players who attain level 50 under the current system will be awarded a new avatar pose, and all players will receive an in-game medal commemorating their highest achieved level prior to the changes.

With these changes not taking effect until October, players have a limited timeframe to reach level 50 if they wish to do so. In anticipation, from now until October 14th at 11:59 p.m. local time, Pokémon GO will host an XP celebration event. This event offers players double XP for successful catches made with Nice, Great, or Excellent throws, as well as an additional 3,000 XP for each completed Raid or Max Battle. Players can also engage in new Timed Research opportunities that will reward them with extra XP, while Niantic has relaxed the requirements for a Level-Up task at level 47, now only necessitating players to walk 25 km in a week two times instead of the previous eight times.

What are your thoughts on these adjustments? Are you planning to reach level 50 before the transition occurs in October? We invite you to share your opinions with us in the comments section below!

This updated leveling system highlights Niantic’s commitment to evolving the Pokémon GO experience for its dedicated community. Stay tuned for more updates as they are announced.
