Celebrating Four Decades of Transformers: The Movie with a Deluxe Comic Edition

In a significant move for collectors and fans alike, the anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie is marked by the upcoming release of a deluxe anniversary comic edition that promises to bring iconography to life in a new format.

40 Years Later, The Transformers: The Movie Returns With a Deluxe Anniversary Comic

Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics have announced their partnership with Hasbro to create the first hardcover collected edition featuring both comic adaptations of the landmark film. Scheduled for release on August 12, the The Transformers: The Movie Deluxe Edition consolidates Marvel Comics’ classic three-part 1986 limited series alongside IDW Publishing’s four-part Transformers: The Animated Movie adaptation into a single volume for the very first time.

This historic comic collection will also showcase an eye-catching new cover art created by Sean Murphy, renowned artist of Batman: White Knight. Such an artistic reimagining not only appeals to long-time fans but also encourages new collectors to engage with the Transformers legacy.

Senior Editor Nachie Marsham expressed his personal connection to the original film, remarking, “The Transformers: The Movie hit like a lightning bolt. Anyone who’s seen it (including me!) has at least one moment forever burned into their memory. Reprinting both the original and the 20th anniversary adaptations in this new volume is a great way for folks to experience it all over again!” This sentiment is indicative of the film’s lasting impact as a touchstone in the genre.

According to the official press release, the edition invites readers to relive the emotional stakes of the Autobots’ epic battles, resonating with brand loyalty and nostalgia. Highlights include the tragic downfall of Optimus Prime and the emergence of a new generation facing the dire threat of Unicron. The publication serves as a gateway for both new audiences and die-hard fans, making this deluxe hardcover a noteworthy addition for any collector.

Originally directed by Nelson Shin, with a screenplay by Ron Friedman, The Transformers: The Movie depicts a future for the franchise, chronicling the Autobots’ disciplined clash with the Decepticons, accentuated by heartfelt moments such as Optimus Prime’s poignant sacrifice early in the narrative.

Despite its initial box office shortfall—struggling to surpass its modest $6 million budget—The Transformers: The Movie has transcended its cinematic roots, evolving into a cultural phenomenon cherished by fans across various generations. This enduring legacy has motivated Hasbro to initiate an “1986 Apology Tour,” returning the film to theaters to mark its 40th anniversary and evoke nostalgia among viewers.

Alyse D’Antuono, Hasbro’s Vice President of Global Brand & Franchise Strategy for Action Brands, stated, “The Transformers: The Movie marked a defining moment for the franchise. From the emotional impact of Optimus Prime’s passing to the dynamic storytelling that followed, we recognize just how powerful and unforgettable that moment remains. This anniversary is about honoring the legacy, thanking fans for four decades of loyalty and passion as Hasbro and our partners mark this milestone across entertainment, toys, and surprises.”

The Transformers: The Movie Deluxe Edition by Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics will be available for purchase starting August 12.
