In a significant move for the toy and collectibles market, Universal Pictures has officially removed the highly anticipated spinoff, Soulm8te, from its release schedule, raising questions about the future of the M3GAN franchise and the impact on collectibles tied to its success.
Originally set to debut on January 8, 2026, Soulm8te will no longer arrive in theaters as planned, with no marketing materials having emerged as the release approached. This decision comes on the heels of M3GAN 2.0 underperforming at the box office, a sequel that veered away from the horror roots that made the original a viral sensation in early 2023.
Blumhouse founder Jason Blum reflected on this shift during an interview, acknowledging that the expectations surrounding M3GAN were perhaps overinflated. “We all thought Megan was like Superman. We could do anything to her. We could change genres… and we classically over-thought how powerful people’s engagement was with her,” he stated.
Box office statistics underscore the disparity between the film entries, with M3GAN 2.0 grossing a disappointing $39.1 million globally compared to a remarkable $180 million for its predecessor. Collectors and retailers may take note of how these financial results could influence future merchandise associated with the franchise.
While little has been shown publicly of Soulm8te, a teaser trailer was unveiled at CinemaCon, featuring Lily Sullivan as an AI companion to a grieving man, portrayed by David Rysdahl. Directed by Kate Dolan, this film was based on a story from creators James Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Rafael Jordan. Lines from the trailer suggest complex emotional themes, with Sullivan’s character stating, “Nobody will ever know you like I do,” emphasizing the film’s darker undertones.
With the film’s future uncertain, it is expected that Soulm8te will enter the market as a potential offering to other studios. This development is crucial for collectors and retailers who look to align with successful franchises, highlighting the unpredictable nature of film properties in relation to the collectibles market.
