Hong Kong cinema icon Jackie Chan received a warm welcome at the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland as he was honored with the Pardo alla Carriera, or Career Leopard award, on the Piazza Grande.
Upon taking the stage, Chan greeted the audience with a confident “Buona sera,” showcasing his language skills, before humorously commenting on the weight of the award, describing it as “very, very heavy.”
In a heartfelt address, Chan expressed his appreciation, stating, “I am just so happy and so honored to be here.” He extended his gratitude to the Locarno Film Festival and the attendees, acknowledging the directors and actors who have contributed to his success, and notably thanking his global fanbase: “Because of you, I am standing here.”
Reflecting on his longevity in the industry, Chan reminisced about his father’s question regarding his fighting abilities at age 60, responding with pride, “I am 71. I still can fight.” Adding that he has been a part of the film industry for 64 years, this elicited enthusiastic applause from the crowd.
As the ceremony concluded, Chan conveyed his wishes for global unity, advocating for love and peace, closing with heartfelt expressions of affection for his fans: “Love you all! Ti amo!” accompanied by playful kissing gestures.
Even moments after the event, cheers of “Jackie!” resonated around the Piazza Grande, illustrating the affection the public holds for this legendary figure. Fans adorned in Jackie Chan merchandise and holding signs displayed their admiration, amplifying the festive atmosphere.
On the red carpet, Chan endeared himself to supporters, exchanging waves, smiles, and even striking a martial arts pose for the cameras. This celebratory spirit was further enhanced by a video montage highlighting his iconic stunts and comedic prowess.
Chan’s presence in Locarno was not merely as an honoree; he engaged the audience by screening his renowned films Project A (1983) and Police Story (1985), where he not only starred but also directed.
Locarno’s artistic director, Giona A. Nazzaro, shared, “As a fan of Hong Kong cinema—having authored three books on the subject—honoring Jackie Chan is a dream come true.”
Festival organizers commended Chan as an “Asian megastar, master filmmaker, and Hollywood mainstay,” acknowledging his role in bridging Eastern and Western cinematic traditions. His enduring influence, spanning nearly six decades, has made him a universally acknowledged figure.
“Director, producer, actor, screenwriter, choreographer, singer, athlete, and daredevil stuntman, Jackie Chan is a pivotal figure in contemporary Asian cinema and has fundamentally reshaped Hollywood,” noted Nazzaro, highlighting Chan’s remarkable career trajectory from a childhood stuntman to a global icon.
The Pardo alla Carriera award is awarded with the support of Ascona-Locarno Tourism, the festival’s destination partner. Previous recipients of this prestigious honor include luminaries such as Francesco Rosi, Bruno Ganz, and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, among others.
