Last updated:

IDW Publishing continues to expand its rich portfolio of Star Trek titles, introducing a significant one-shot comic titled Star Trek Deviations: Threads of Destiny, focused on the iconic character Lieutenant Nyota Uhura. This release, debuting on February 25, 2026, strategically coincides with Black History Month, underscoring the importance of representation in both the comic and collectibles market.

New Star Trek Comic Spotlights Lieutenant Uhura for Black History Month

The Deviations line represents IDW’s innovative approach to storytelling, reminiscent of Marvel’s What If series, exploring alternate scenarios within the beloved Star Trek universe. This particular issue reimagines the classic episode “The City on the Edge of Forever,” placing Uhura at the forefront as she navigates the complexities of 20th-century America during the Civil Rights Movement.

Written by Stephanie Williams and illustrated by Greg Maldonado and Anthony Fowler Jr., Threads of Destiny aims to reflect on the vital role communication plays in societal progress. The official description reads:

This special one-shot features Lieutenant Nyota Uhura. In the 23rd century, she explores far-flung star systems with her crew on the Enterprise as part of her mission to communicate and build bridges with life found across the Galaxy. But in the 20th century, humankind was working to build understanding among themselves, with African Americans on Earth championing the Civil Rights Movement and using their voices and acts of protest to end racial segregation and discrimination.

Now, by way of the Guardian of Forever, Uhura is yanked back through time to 1963. There, she’ll join all those fighting for equality and justice and reconnect to why her work as a communications officer is perhaps the most important work of all.

Release Date: February 25, 2026 — Preorder Deadline: January 19, 2026. Collectors can find their copies at local comic shops.

In related news within the Star Trek franchise, filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are set to write, produce, and direct a new Star Trek film that will explore uncharted territory, disconnected from existing narratives.
