Virtua Fighter 6 has unveiled its first substantial gameplay video, showcasing stunning graphics that continue to elevate the franchise’s visual legacy.
Sega has previously shared teaser trailers and a technical demonstration for its eagerly anticipated ‘New Virtual Fighter Project.’ The latest trailer, unveiled during the EVO fighting game tournament, serves as a testament to the quality of visuals and animations in actual gameplay.
In this preview, we see beloved character Akira, donning an outfit reminiscent of those seen in Donnie Yen’s Ip Man series, as he faces off against new fighter Stella in the Training Stage.
The in-game action appears to mirror the impressive visuals of the earlier tech demo presented at Nvidia’s CES event in January. At that time, Sega described the release as a “pre-development concept video” for Virtua Fighter 6, clarifying that it would not reflect the final product’s graphical fidelity or gameplay mechanics.
The footage showcased during Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang’s keynote at CES 2025 displayed exceptionally realistic animations, featuring an Akira mirror match reminiscent of choreography from classic martial arts cinema.
However, the newly released video, labeled by Sega as a ‘Combat Gameplay First Look,’ emphasizes fluid animations and captivating transitions, including a slow-motion effect on missed strikes, enhancing the realism of Virtua Fighter compared to its contemporaries.
“No infinite juggles, no crazy magic, no stupid invincible ex, no stupid rage art, no spamming rage drive, focus attacks etc. Just pure fighting, I like that,” commented one fan on YouTube.
“VF6 is feeling like those old martial arts films,” remarked another enthusiast. “No drive impact, no heat system, no rev system, just straight up hands. I cannot wait for this to drop.”
While the gameplay does feature a noticeable damage effect where Stella shows facial injuries, it embraces a simplistic, more fundamental approach to the fighting genre.
Currently in development at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for the Yakuza and Like a Dragon franchises, Virtua Fighter 6 does not yet have a confirmed release window or target platforms. The series has been dormant for years, with fans relying on mini-game appearances in Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s titles and the 2021 release of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown to satisfy their cravings.
More details on the battle system are expected to emerge during the Tokyo Game Show in September. A definitive release date has yet to be established.
