Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated reboot of The X-Files has officially received a series order at Hulu. This revival brings the iconic sci-fi franchise back to television with a new cast of characters and a fresh perspective on supernatural investigations.
New Agents, New Mysteries
The reimagining will star Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel as two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely partnership. They are assigned to a long-shuttered division dedicated to investigating unexplained phenomena.
According to the series logline, the new agents will dive into cases involving the inexplicable, carrying on the franchise’s legacy of blending science fiction, mystery, and government conspiracies. Notably, the reboot will focus on all-new characters rather than recasting the original duo, Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, who were portrayed by Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny.
Behind the Scenes
Coogler, the Oscar-winning filmmaker known for Sinners and Black Panther, has not only written and directed the pilot, but he is also an executive producer for the series. Hulu officially picked up the pilot in February 2023. Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner, bringing her experience to guide the series’ narrative.
The series is produced by Proximity Media, a company Coogler co-founded with Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, in collaboration with 20th Television. The production team includes Zinzi Coogler, Ohanian, and original The X-Files creator Chris Carter, who will also serve as executive producers alongside Simone Harris from Proximity Media and the leads, Deadwyler and Patel, as co-executive producers.
Legacy of The X-Files
The original The X-Files, created by Chris Carter, debuted on Fox in 1993 and became one of the most influential science fiction series in television history. It followed FBI agents Mulder and Scully as they investigated paranormal cases, ranging from alien encounters to government cover-ups. The franchise has spanned 11 seasons during its original run and subsequent revivals, garnering 61 Emmy nominations and winning 15.
The Hulu reboot aims to preserve the spirit of the original series while opening a new chapter in the franchise’s mythology. With Coogler at the helm and a fresh investigative duo leading the narrative, viewers can expect a new lens on the unexplained mysteries at the heart of The X-Files.
Previous Collaborations
Deadwyler and Patel previously worked together on HBO’s Station Eleven. Deadwyler’s notable credits include The Harder They Fall, Till, and The Piano Lesson, while Patel is recognized for his performances in EastEnders, Yesterday, and a supporting role in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
What’s Next?
