Amazon MGM Studios is hard at work on a new Stargate television series, with Jac Schaeffer, the creative mind behind Marvel’s acclaimed WandaVision, leading the project. According to Variety, this initiative stems from Schaeffer’s overall deal with the studio, announced earlier in the year.
A writers’ room is reportedly expected to open soon, indicating that development is progressing steadily. Schaeffer will also serve as executive producer alongside Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures.
Past Attempts and Future Prospects
This marks Amazon’s second major effort to resurrect the Stargate franchise after a previous attempt led by writer and producer Martin Gero did not move forward. While specific details about the new series, including its storyline and cast, are still under wraps, anticipation is building about how this new chapter will unfold.
Jac Schaeffer’s Track Record
Schaeffer’s experience in sci-fi and fantasy television gives fans hope. She was the creative force behind WandaVision, Marvel Studios’ first original series for Disney+, which received 23 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, making a significant mark in contemporary television.
Following that success, she developed Agatha All Along, a spinoff focusing on Kathryn Hahn’s character. With a strong background in storytelling, including prior works like Disney’s Olaf’s Frozen Adventure and the comedy The Hustle, Schaeffer brings a wealth of knowledge and creativity to the table.
The Stargate Legacy
Stargate first captured audiences in the 1994 film directed by Roland Emmerich, featuring stars Kurt Russell and James Spader. The franchise flourished with the introduction of Stargate SG-1, which enjoyed a 10-season run, establishing its place in sci-fi history alongside beloved installments like Stargate Atlantis.
As Amazon continues to develop this new project, it remains uncertain whether the series will forge a completely new narrative or build upon the vast mythology created by earlier series. The potential for renewal in the Stargate universe is exciting, especially for long-time fans hoping to see the beloved franchise return to television screens.
