J.M. DeMatteis Returns to Spider-Man: What His Epilogue Means for Collectors and Fans

Date:

In an exciting moment for Spider-Man enthusiasts and collectors, today marks the release of Amazing Spider-Man #1000, a significant milestone celebrating Marvel’s enduring legacy. While the primary narrative by Joe Kelly and Pepe Larraz delves into the introduction of a new villain, Ravage, this issue also features an impressive lineup of legendary Spider-Man creators who contribute to the anthology, including esteemed writers like Dan Slott, Brian Michael Bendis, and J.M. DeMatteis.

DeMatteis joins the renowned Spider-Man artist Humberto Ramos to craft an epilogue to his iconic Harry Osborn Green Goblin saga from the 1990s, a story originally illustrated by the late Sal Buscema. This collaboration is not only a nostalgic nod for long-time fans but also a testament to the enduring influence of DeMatteis’s work.

In a recent exclusive interview, DeMatteis reflected on revisiting these beloved characters. “I’ve had a long, fruitful history with Peter Parker and company, and I’m both delighted and grateful to be a part of this celebration. Amazing Spider-Man #400 remains a favorite of mine (even if Aunt May did get better very quickly!),” he expressed, highlighting his deep connection to the Spider-Man universe.

CBR: After writing one of the most historic ‘anniversary’ issues ever in Amazing Spider-Man #400, how trippy is it to be writing a story in Amazing Spider-Man #1000?!

J.M. DeMatteis: I’ve had a long, fruitful history with Peter Parker and company, and I’m both delighted and grateful to be a part of this celebration.

As a pivotal architect of iconic stories like ‘The Harry Osborn Green Goblin Saga’ and ‘Kraven’s Last Hunt’, how does it feel knowing that over thirty years later, fans are eager to see an epilogue to your old stories?

DeMatteis acknowledged, “I’m going to use the same phrase again: delighted and grateful. The idea that those stories would still have resonance decades later is something that never crossed my mind when I was working on them. I was just trying to create the best stories I could at the time…and hit my deadline!”

Reflecting on how the stories have stood the test of time, he mentioned, ‘It would have been great to have an issue catch my breath and sit with the characters, get into their heads and hearts, after Harry’s death.’ However, he clarified that this new story offers a fresh perspective that complements existing narratives without contradiction.

In terms of character history, DeMatteis’s contributions have been so impactful that the definitive history of Norman Osborn has been shaped by his work. “I’m just—delighted and grateful to have been a part of Peter Parker’s world for all these years,” he concluded, emphasizing his ongoing relationship with the character that continues to resonate in both comics and animation.

If I recall correctly, this is the first time you’ve done a story with a fellow Spider-Man legend, Humberto Ramos. What was that experience like?

DeMatteis expressed his admiration for Ramos, stating, “I was blown away by Humberto’s work. He just knocked it out of the park. I hope we get a chance to work together again sooner than later.” This synergy between creators enhances the collectible value of the issue, as it showcases the convergence of talent spanning decades.

Amazing Spider-Man #1000 is now available for collectors and fans alike, representing not just an anniversary issue, but a moment that encapsulates the rich history and evolving narrative of one of Marvel’s most beloved characters.
