'Magic School Bus' Moving Forward with Elizbeth Banks as Ms. Frizzle

Elizabeth Banks is set to infuse new life into the beloved franchise as she steps into the role of the adventurous teacher Ms. Frizzle in a live-action adaptation of The Magic School Bus. This development represents a significant moment for collectors and retailers in the toy and collectibles market, as it signals renewed interest in a classic series that has captivated audiences since its inception.

Legendary Pictures has acquired the rights to produce the feature film, with Rob Letterman on board to write a treatment and direct. Letterman’s previous work with Legendary on Detective Pikachu has showcased his capability to translate popular properties to the screen effectively. Scholastic, the original publisher of the book series, will collaborate on production alongside Banks’ Brownstone Productions and Marc Platt Productions.

The original series, created by writer Joanna Cole and illustrator Bruce Degen, debuted in 1986 and followed Ms. Frizzle and her class on imaginative field trips facilitated by a transforming yellow school bus. This nostalgic aspect positions the film to resonate not only with a new generation of viewers but also with collectors who cherish the original media. The animated series, featuring the voice of Lily Tomlin as Ms. Frizzle, aired for 52 episodes from 1994 to 1997, with Kate McKinnon portraying Ms. Frizzle’s younger sister in Netflix’s reboot, The Magic School Bus Rides Again.

Banks, who is currently appearing in the Peacock series The Miniature Wife and previously starred in DreamQuil, has shown a strong interest in the project since 2020, when it was first linked to Universal Pictures. With such strong roots in educational entertainment and the stellar creative team behind it, the upcoming film offers a promising prospect for toy and collectible lines tied to the property.

Rob Letterman, already familiar with Scholastic through his work on the 2015 Goosebumps adaptation, brings further assurance of quality to this new installment.
