The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is poised for a significant transformation aimed at enhancing accessibility for both seasoned fans and newcomers alike. In a recent discussion, directors Anthony and Joe Russo unveiled their vision for Avengers: Doomsday, emphasizing that the franchise is effectively ‘starting over from scratch.’ This strategic approach could greatly influence collectors and retailers alike as it opens doors to a wider audience.

The Hollywood Reporter reported on the Russo Brothers’ insight during their appearance at SXSW London, where they shared their thoughts on the future of the MCU. Addressing the challenges of superhero fatigue, Joe and Anthony Russo expressed their relief that writer Stephen McFeely devised an engaging concept poised to reignite audience interest. The brothers noted that they felt ‘exhausted’ after seven years at the helm, which underscores their commitment to rejuvenating the franchise.
“[McFeely] came up with this creative idea that reignited [the project], and I can’t talk about that creative idea, because it’s the basis for Doomsday, but [it] all of a sudden broke the skies open for us, and we saw all new kinds of possibilities with that idea,” they revealed.
Furthermore, Joe Russo confirmed that the introduction of Doctor Doom will be integral to this new chapter in the MCU. “That serial shifting and changing and surprising you and then reinventing itself and then shifting and changing and then surprising you — that’s exciting and I think you’re going to see some shifting and changing [with Doomsday],” he stated. This could signify a pivotal moment for both veteran collectors and new entrants into the world of Marvel merchandise.
For fans and collectors, the Russo Brothers’ assertion that the MCU is essentially reverting to ‘phase zero’ offers a unique opportunity. “We want to make sure everybody feels like this isn’t leaning on anything from the past,” Joe Russo emphasized, suggesting that the upcoming installment will invite more individuals to partake in the MCU narrative.
Doomsday is set for a theatrical release on December 18, 2026. The film promises a collaborative effort among characters from various Marvel properties, including the Avengers, Wakandans, New Avengers/Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and the original X-Men, all uniting against Doctor Doom. How the Russo Brothers navigate this ‘fresh start’ while integrating established franchises holds considerable intrigue for the market.

With a star-studded cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Pedro Pascal, and Florence Pugh, among others, the ensemble is so extensive that Marvel dedicated an hours-long streaming event to tease its lineup. The Russo Brothers shared insights on managing such a large group of beloved characters. “Each one of those actors is playing somebody’s favorite character. And so, if you’re not going to search the character properly, then you’re going to disappoint someone in that audience,” Joe Russo noted, indicating a careful storytelling approach.
He further elaborated, saying, “If Thor, when he lands, if that accidentally cuts [Sebastian] Stan’s head off… That’s how close those points of view are to each other, and that’s all very calibrated, from a protocol standpoint.”
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to make its theatrical debut on December 18, 2026, and the Russo Brothers are set to redefine the collection experience with their latest endeavor.
