LIGHTS, CAMERA, SUPER HERO ACTION!

Simon Williams has navigated a tumultuous journey, oscillating between villainy and heroism, establishing a unique presence within the Avengers team. As his lore unfolds, the narrative raises an intriguing question: what happens when past transgressions resurface? Enter Randolph Chancellor, Simon’s former cellmate, adding layers to our protagonist’s story.

In a recent interview with CBR, Duggan not only delved into the creative nuances of the new series but also dropped an unexpected revelation regarding his future with Marvel. Given Duggan’s track record with high-profile titles including Deadpool, Uncanny Avengers, and X-Men, his insights are particularly relevant for those invested in the Marvel narrative landscape.

CBR: Which version of Wonder Man was “your” Wonder Man when you started reading comics?

Gerry Duggan: I was a West Coast Avengers guy, and I picked up his first solo comic – how could you not with that amazing Sienkiewicz cover?

The cover of Wonder Man #1

In your West Coast Avengers run, you cleverly sidelined the “pacifist” approach of Wonder Man. Would you say that’s no longer a key part of the character for this new series?

No, I think it’s a fun challenge. I once played a D&D character as a pacifist – mostly to drive Brian Posehn nuts; most of my D&D choices were to give him a stroke. The bit is less funny after he actually had one, but I don’t think I’m to blame. I’m almost done writing the series, and I’ve managed to not fall off the tightrope I’m walking about violence.

Wonder Man flies into action

Clearly, Wonder Man’s criminal past is a part of this series, with his former cellmate playing a role, but I’m just curious, when you think about the character as a whole, do you see him as a “reformed villain” still? Or is he like someone like Hawkeye, where that aspect occasionally comes up, but no one really views that as central to the character anymore?

I think because we’re celebrating Wonder Man and jumping around in time, that fans will be really excited. This is Simon’s Story (Gerry’s Version).

Wonder Man flies through the sky

You’ve mentioned before how you never got a chance to use some of your concepts for traditional Iron Man stories because you were writing the book during a very specific era. Do you ever end up adapting concepts you had for one character into another one, or do you just hold on to the ideas? Amusingly enough, on that note, did you know that “Kraven’s Last Hunt” actually originated AS a Wonder Man story!?

Wait WHAT? Wasn’t it originally a Batman story from the distinguished competition? No, my stories are pretty much my stories – I don’t think I’ve ever dragged one from one file to another. That has to be not true, right? I’ve been privileged to tell stories in this universe for almost 15 years, so there must be something I’m not thinking of?

Wonder Man shows off his ID

The new series cleverly references some aspects of the new streaming series. Had you seen any of the show before coming up with your concept for this series?

Yes, I saw the complete show in 2025, and it’s a love letter to my industry and my city. I adore the show, and I think anyone would. As for the comic, it’s a love letter to Los Angeles and show business, and I’m making it a love letter to Marvel from the fan inside me. The orbit of my career is changing in 2026 and this is my thank you, an expression of my gratitude as I change lanes; it’s my last series for the House Of Ideas for now, and I want to thank Danny [Khazem], CB [Cebulski], Wil [Moss], and everyone at Studios in Burbank. I’m getting to show this city as it is today—post-labor actions, post-fires. It’s a city in need, and I love it, and this story is a lovely story about dreams and dreamers. Wonder Man is such a cool character — I’m glad I got a chance to drill down on him.

Wonder Man talks to Hellcat

Mark Buckingham is a total legend, do you find yourself adjusting your writing to his skill set, knowing that, for instance, he’s one of the best artists out there at handling dialogue-heavy sequences?

LOVE Mark. Very grateful for him, and his work is sublime here. It’s a special comic.

Wonder Man is shocked

Will any of your characters from West Coast Avengers make an appearance in this series?

Yes – Killerwatt has some really fun beats here. Thanks for reading.
